Dr. James Andersen has been a Principal Investigator at Meridien Research since 2010. He is board certified in Addiction Medicine and was a family practitioner for over 35 years, providing valuable medical services for Lakeland and rural Polk County.
Board Certification: Family and Addiction Medicine
Dr. Andersen has been board certified in Family Medicine since 1975. This certification means that he has experience diagnosing and treating many types of acute and chronic illness as well as providing preventative care. He started as a Sub-Investigator at Meridien’s Brooksville Clinic in 2009, then became Principal Investigator in 2010. In 2013, Dr. Andersen moved to Meridien Research’s Lakeland site and took a lead role as Principal Investigator.
In 2010, Dr. Andersen became board certified in Addiction Medicine. He understands how addiction can make long-term changes in people’s personalities, because the brain and body are negatively affected by the miss use of prescription medications and illicit drugs.
Dr. Andersen has been using his Suboxone certification to prescribe buprenorphine for over 10 yrs and recently conducted a buprenorphine clinical trial at Meridien Research’s Lakeland site. Buprenorphine is used to treat dependence/addiction to opioids: legal drugs such as fentanyl, codeine, and morphine and illegal drugs such as heroin and opium. Buprenorphine belongs to a class of drugs called mixed opioid agonist-antagonists. It helps prevent withdrawal symptoms caused by stopping other opioids.
Additionally, Meridien Research’s Lakeland clinic — with Dr. Andersen as Principal Investigator — was selected to be a NIDA (National Institute of Drug Abuse) site to conduct an up-coming study involving cocaine addiction.
Clinical Research Benefits the Lakeland Community
As well as his clinical research studies with Meridien Research, Dr. Andersen hones his addiction medicine capabilities as a Medical Director at Lakeland Centres, Polk County’s only methadone clinic. He has worked at the Centre for nearly two decades. Lakeland Centres is the only State-certified methadone clinic in Polk, Highlands and Hardee counties.
Dr. Andersen is also involved with Bridges International (known as Bridges of America), as a Director at their Auburndale and Orlando facilities. Bridges International (BI) is the largest private provider of re-entry programming in the state of Florida, providing a continuum of care in Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Programs.
As Meridien Research, Dr. Andersen has conducted a wide range of research due to his experience and ability to practice in many areas of medicine. He has completed clinical trials in the following diseases and disorders:
Alzheimer’s Disease Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Cardiovascular Peripheral Neuropathy
Diabetes Mellitus Obesity
He has also performed studies on mental health, vaccinations, overactive bladder and women’s health.
Dr. Andersen is considered an expert in addiction research and well-respected health care resource in the Lakeland community. A significant number of people who suffer from addiction are unable to find treatments, because they are often stigmatized by the medical community. Resources for them are very few and heavily regulated, which makes treating them even more difficult.
“People suffering from addictions need compassionate care,” explained Dr. Andersen. “A consistent regimen of counseling and medications may help them function in their daily lives.”
Meridien Research believes that medical research is an important part of finding new treatments for medical conditions. Their mission is to provide the highest quality clinical research in a professional, ethical, and timely manner. All of the Meridien Research sites are committed to providing the best possible clinical care to their research participants. Patients who qualify for a clinical research trial may have the opportunity to receive examinations by a qualified physician, the latest forms of treatment, including investigational medications that are no cost to the patient, and reimbursement for time and travel.
